OIDS 2.0 is described as 'melding elements of games like Choplifter, Asteroids, Defender, Lode Runner and Lunar Lander.' When it was first released in 1990, the game earned a five mice rating from Macworld magazine. The last version before this release was 1.4, made back in 1991.

Improvements in OIDS 2.0 include:

  • PowerPC-native code.
  • The screen can now be resized to any dimension, square or rectangular. Users have played OIDS at resolutions as high as 1920×1600.
  • OIDS is now capable of running at the refresh rate of your monitor. The earlier releases were limited to 12 frames per second.
  • QuickTime MIDI music may be added to individual planetoids.
  • High Score competition: gamers can post their OIDS high scores on the OIDS High Scores list.
  • Xavagus Prime Software is part-time shareware business created by Kirk Baker, an experienced game programmer with fifteen years of experience (currently looking for work) whose past credits include the original commercial release of OIDS, as well as Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep, Courier Crisis and Beavis and Butthead. He also worked on the CD-ROM and DVD versions of the acclaimed Encyclopedia Britannica. Baker acquired the rights to OIDS, has updated it, and released the game as shareware.

Recently Baker dropped MacCentral a line to let readers know of his new effort. He's proud of his new creation, and said, 'OIDS has turned out really well. It is very smooth on fast Macs even with huge resolutions (one tester reported getting 76 fps at 1920×1600 resolution on a Dual 800 PowerMac G4).'

Baker added that OIDS High Scores list records both all-time and monthly high scores. '… people who aren't OIDS pros can get their scores on the list (at least at the beginning of the month),' he said.

System requirements call for a PowerPC-based Mac (G3 or better recommended) running Mac OS 7.x through Mac OS 9.x. OIDS can run as a Classic application under Mac OS X, but running in Mac OS 9.x is recommended for optimal performance.

    Abstract

In an effort to resolve the nagging controversy over the management of more than one million acres of public forests, lakes, and streams in northeastern Minnesota, Congress enacted the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act of 1978 (BWCA Act). Despite its objective, the Act has engendered further controversy. Particularly troublesome are several provisions that regulate the use of motorboats on lakes within and partly within the area. Those provisions test the scope of congressional power over nonfederal property under the property clause of article IV of the United States Constitution.

This Article examines the aged Supreme Court cases under which the constitutionality of those provisions must be judged. Based on the Court's decision in Camfield v. United States, the Article argues that the property clause empowers Congress to regulate conduct on nonfederal property if that conduct frustrates a congressional policy applicable to federal property. It concludes that even though the lakes within and partly within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area are not federally owned, the BWCA Act's regulation of motorboats is a valid exercise of the property clause power.
